Monday’s tragic shooting on the Virginia Tech campus was illustrative of how repugnant and evil human being can become. Yet, it displayed the best of humanity as more and more stories of heroism and selflessness have started to emerge. Dr. Waleed Shaalan is one such hero. For the past week the entire world has converged on the college town of Blacksburg Virginia in pursuit of answers to Monday’s massacre of 34 students. A local talk show host had a moving tribute to the victims of the VT shootings and the community as a whole, which led us to wonder why is it that this tragedy brought the entire country together more so than 9/11? After 9/11 people showed their patriotism by displaying the American flag, today however practically every single person wore maroon and gold. It did not matter if they did not have a VT shirt, hat or other collegiate gear; everyone wore something to symbolize their solidarity. A similar act occured with 9/11 and yet this is somehow different. (more…) Filed under: News Comments: None |

Rosie O’Donnell is perhaps the most annoying person on TV, however, we must give credit where credit is due. She speaks quite intelligently about our current standing in the world. It is hilarious to hear Elisabeth Hasselbeck regurgitate the same old neo-con. talking points that Iraq had WMDs and they were linked to 911. Filed under: Uncategorized Comments: None |

Recently, A More Perfect Union, The Council for America’s First Freedom, and the University of Richmond Chaplaincy hosted Dr. Akbar Ahmed and Dr. Judea Pearl as part of the Daniel Pearl Dialogue series. The dialogue “ranged from policy issues to theological perceptions to truth, lies and deepest fears. This personal yet public dialogue continues to carve a path for mutual understanding between the two communities,” according to the Daniel Pearl Foundation website, danielpearl.org. To say the Muslims are surprised by the ’sectarian violence’ in Iraq is disingenuous. To blame the US for the ’sectarian violence’ in Iraq is to look for an escape goat and not face reality. No one is to blame but the Muslim community, more specifically the Sunnies (who are the majority of Muslims but a minority in Iraq), more particularly Saudi literature (especially books penned by Billal Phillips an ardent anti Shiah.) Simply state the Sunnies had it coming! (more…) Filed under: International Comments: None |

It was a mystery for years that was petrifying to me. I could not figure out what was happening. All I knew was that my chest would constrict, the veins in my head would bulge and I would start panting and grasping for air — all of this simply because I was washing my hair under water. Then suddenly it hit me thanks greatly to President Bush and his “we don’t torture” torture technique known as waterboarding. What was happening to me and continues to happen to me everyday when I take a shower and wash my hair is I experience waterboarding. Filed under: Uncategorized Comments: None |
